What’s the REAL key to success with your social media marketing strategy? One of my favorite “summer songs” sums it all up in one line “You Only Get What You Give” and isn’t that the truth? If you’re not active, supportive, engaged, and give freely to others there’s a great chance that your social media marketing will not work for you.
So how exactly do you “give” with social media? It’s really simple and here it’s boiled down to 3 Do’s and 3 Don’ts:
Social Media Do’s
Know who you are talking to and what they are looking for – there’s nothing worse than reading info from people you have nothing in common with. Social Media is Not the Medium to Cold Call!
Offer help and insight whenever you can – with social media you have the opportunity to be the expert. Share your expertise!
Be active on the social media platforms you choose to be involved with – be social, join in the conversation. Social Media is not something you can do halfway.
Social Media Don’ts
Don’t push your information to those you have connected with.
Don’t be negative – one of the great things about social media is the positive, helpful tact that it takes.
Biggest Don’t – DON’T waste your readers time! Whenever I’m speaking at events someone always says something along the lines of “I don’t want to get involved with social media because I don’t care what my friends had for lunch.” And while those of us who are involved and active with social media know better, it’s tough to beat that stigma.
So to wrap it all up, remember this important line from The New Radicals song that SO pertains to social media – You Only Get What You Give.
